Teaching young children about their five senses can be enjoyable. They enjoy reflecting on all the things they can touch, see, taste, smell, and hear. This fun five senses activity is ideal for a science unit.

This sorting activity is designed to teach EYFS children about their five senses. The activity includes a sorting mat for each sense and four corresponding sorting cards. This activity is perfect for the investigation area and can be provided for EYFS children to explore independently.

The child will practice object classification and improve associative thinking whilst discovering new concepts.

To play the game, you will need to print out the game material and cut out the pieces. The game board displays four sensory organs and cells that are empty opposite to them. The aim is to put the cards that have objects that can be recognized using a specific sense in front of each corresponding organ.

First, explain to your child that we get information using our five senses:

• eyes (eyesight),
• ears (hearing),
• tongue (taste),
• nose (smell),
• skin (touch).

Please provide examples from daily life to aid comprehension. Then, ask your child to examine and categorize objects based on their perception. Highlight that various things can be detected with different senses. It is crucial to listen to your child’s reasoning why they placed the card in a specific box.
